Under the environmental storm, how can water treatment defoamers move towards "greening"?

2026-08-01

In industrial wastewater treatment, circulating cooling water system, food processing, papermaking, chemical production and other fields, too much foam will lead to equipment efficiency decline, energy waste, water quality deterioration, and even affect safety production. Water treatment defoamer, as a chemical agent for effectively breaking foam, has become an indispensable part of modern water treatment technology.

In recent years, with the tightening of global environmental policies and the promotion of "dual carbon" goals, the water treatment industry has faced unprecedented pressure for green transformation. As an important additive in water treatment processes, the environmental performance of defoamers is increasingly becoming a focus of attention. Traditional defoamers are prone to secondary pollution due to the presence of difficult to degrade substances such as mineral oil, silicone oil, or polyether in their composition, making it difficult to meet the requirements of green development. Therefore, the "greening" upgrade of water treatment defoamers has become an inevitable trend in the development of the industry. In the context of the environmental storm, how can water treatment defoamers move towards "greening"?

Firstly, there is green innovation in raw materials, by using renewable resources such as vegetable oils (such as castor oil, palm oil derivatives), sugar fermentation products, or microbial metabolites to replace traditional petroleum based raw materials and reduce carbon footprint from the source.

Secondly, upgrade the silicon free and low silicon formula. Although organic silicone defoamers have significant effects, they are prone to persistent residues in the environment. Developing silicon free or low silicon composite defoamers (such as polyether modified esters) can reduce ecological risks while maintaining defoaming performance.

Then use nano materials (such as silica aerogel) to build microporous defoamer, improve defoaming efficiency and reduce consumption, thus reducing environmental load. And low-carbon innovation in production processes, using energy-saving technologies such as enzyme catalysis and low-temperature reactions to reduce energy consumption and waste in the production process, while using biodegradable packaging materials to avoid plastic pollution.

In addition, we will continuously promote the improvement of standards and certification systems, promote the establishment of unified green defoamer evaluation standards in the industry, encourage enterprises to verify the environmental friendliness of their products through life cycle assessments, and thereby enhance market competitiveness. Develop specialized green defoamers for different water treatment scenarios, such as industrial wastewater, municipal wastewater, food processing wastewater, etc.

The greening of water treatment defoamers is not only a requirement of environmental policies, but also a manifestation of corporate social responsibility and technological innovation. In the future, with the advancement of biotechnology and materials science, defoamers that combine high efficiency, safety, and environmental friendliness will become the mainstream of the market, helping the water treatment industry achieve sustainable development.
