Why does high-quality printing rely on defoamers?

2026-04-10

In the printing industry, the clarity, color uniformity, and detail expression of finished products are the core standards for measuring quality. However, the problem of bubbles generated during the production process often becomes an "invisible killer" that hinders quality improvement. Whether it is bubbles in ink, varnish, or dampening solution, they can all cause problems such as white spots, texture loss, and decreased adhesion in printed materials. The scientific application of defoamers is the key to solving this problem.

Bubbles in ink can rupture after printing, forming pinholes, white spots, or uneven colors in certain areas, especially in high-speed printing or high-precision dot printing. Secondly, bubbles in the varnish or coating can cause uneven surface after curing, affecting the bonding effect of subsequent processes such as film coating and hot stamping. Moreover, the accumulation of a large number of bubbles may clog the inkjet print head or gravure roller, increase the frequency of shutdown cleaning, and reduce production efficiency. To compensate for bubble defects, it is often necessary to rework or scrap materials, which directly increases production costs.

The defoamer precisely ensures the improvement of printing quality through its advantages of rapid penetration, long-lasting foam suppression, and compatibility design. Defoamer molecules can quickly disperse to the surface of bubbles, reducing the surface tension of the liquid film and causing the bubbles to rupture. Partially modified silicone defoamers can exist stably in the system for a long time, inhibiting the generation of new bubbles.

Although defoamers account for less than 1% of the printing formula, they are a "key additive" that ensures stable quality. With the popularization of environmentally friendly ink and high-speed printing technology, the requirements for the efficiency and safety of defoamers are also increasing. In the future, innovative solutions such as nano defoaming technology and intelligent responsive defoamers may bring more precise solutions to the printing industry.
